Traveling around Lake Michigan: Day 1-3, June 10-13, 2011

On the road again Friday June 10 to Merrill, WI for Andi's (our niece) high school graduation party.  But FIRST, a Wisconsin tradition:  Friday night fish fry.  Phil's two sisters and their families met us at Ed and Sharon's for Fish Fry.  Yum, yum.  Saturday Kerry and Rick drove us around Merrill to see the destruction from the tornado that hit in April.  How very sad to see empty lots where houses had been.  We had lunch at a new Merrill restaurant.

It was a special treat to find out that Mass at St Roberts was for Mark and Betty who were celebrating their 50th anniversary.  They had been Phil's Mom's neighbors for many years.  Then party for Andi!!!! with lots of family and friends.

Before we hit the road on Sunday we had breakfast with Phil's two sisters, Gigi and Kerry and their husbands, Bruce and Rick.

The 2 years we lived in Marquette, MI we would drive through Peshtigo, WI.  This time we visited the Peshtigo Fire Museum.  http://www.peshtigofire.info   On the evening of October 8, 1871 the worst recorded forest fire in North American history raged through Northeastern Wisconsin and Upper Michigan, destroying millions of dollars worth of property and timberland, and taking between 1,200 and 2,400 lives. The fire was the same day as the Chicago fire in 1871.  The fire wiped out the town of Peshtigo.

We stayed at O. B. Fuller County Park Campground on the shores of lake Michigan near Escanaba, MI. It was a very nice campground and quiet.
 And a gorgeous FULL MOON.
